How We Grade Used Golf Balls

Knetgolf offers used golf balls to the golfing public in 2 categories. Recycled golf balls and Refinished golf balls.

Whats the Difference?  Not much..  See our product testing by clicking here.

Recycled Golf Balls are similar to eggs. They are washed, brand and type sorted and then graded by color and cover condition.  The recycled balls are sorted into Mint, Grade A and Grade B condition so the consumer can choose the quality and price point they wish to purchase. For a closer look at the grading process have a quick look at our company video by clicking here.

Refinished Golf Balls are taken to the next step. If a golf ball is 100% intact with no cover abraisions or cuts but is just cosmetically stained, then we refinish some of these golf balls. We only refinish top end golf balls as this process is expensive. The process consists of mechanically stripping the outer clearcoat and paint off the ball taking it back to where it was before it was originally painted. This is done in a golf ball manufacturing facility that has been manufacturing golf balls for over 80 years in the USA.  The ball is then repainted in this golf ball facility and then reclearcoated to ensure a durable product. This process enhances the cosmetics of the ball so it appears and performs like a new ball without any depreciation in performance. Please Note, By law all refinished balls have a small Refinished printed on one pole of the ball.

It is important to note that during the refinishing process we do not and cannot repair golf balls. If the golf balls have any abraisions in the cover due to cart path, tree or scrape marks they are discarded and sold as low end shag balls.

Did you know refinished golf balls have been formally accepted by the USGA. Rule 5-1/4 of the USGA rule book states that “it is permissible for such a ball to be used”. So there you have it, Refinished golf balls are permissible in tournament play!

Below are definitions of our grading for both Recycled and Refinished golf balls.

RECYCLED MINT
These golf balls are like new in appearance and will feel and play as a new ball would. They may include tiny player marks, but no scuffs or blemishes.  We like to call them “One Hit Wonder” golf balls as it was most likely lost after the first swing or two. They may contain corporate or team logos.

RECYCLED GRADE A
These golf balls all have some minor imperfection that keeps them from being Mint. There will be small player marks, minor scuffs, or slight blemishes. Most people would consider these balls Mint, but we are just too picky. These balls are similar to a new ball after being played for 3-4 holes. The shine and color of the balls may slightly vary, but the integrity of the flight characteristic is not compromised at all. They may contain corporate or team logos.

RECYCLED GRADE B
These are the same as a golf ball you have played with for a few holes. (They don't look new anymore, but you would keep teeing them up.) These are balls that did not make it into our Grade A category. They will have player marks, scuffs, or blemishes, but nothing bad enough to affect the playability of the ball. They may contain corporate or team logos.

RECYCLED PRACTICE QUALITY
These balls are what many of us would use to play that very hard water hole, or to just smack around in the field. The quality will be poor and consist of cuts, major scuffs, heavy off-coloring, large ink marks, and generally represent balls you would not want to use in any type of competition. But for practicing, the price cannot be beat!

REFINISHED  (NO ink marks. NO pen marks. NO team or corporate logos, just like new!)

Our official pre-owned refinished golf balls are used golf balls that are reconditioned using a modern process in a factory that manufactures new golf balls. This process does not affect the playability of the golf ball, but brings their cosmetics and performance up to a level where they appear and behave comparable to new golf balls. Knetgolf only reconditions style specific golf balls, meaning only a used Titleist Pro V1x will be reconditioned into a mint refinished Titleist Pro V1x. In preparing for the reconditioning process, balls that are scuffed or have had their cover compromised are not reconditioned and are discarded. Only balls that are as close to perfect (if not perfect) in cover but are cosmetically challenged are refinished and sold. Knetgolf sells millions of these golf balls annually around the world. Did you know refinished golf balls have been formally accepted by the USGA. Rule 5-1/4 of the USGA rule book states that “it is permissible for such a ball to be used”. So there you have it, Refinished golf balls are permissible in tournament play! Please Note, By law all refinished balls have a small Refinished printed on one pole of the ball.
