Golf Balls History

Learn the history of golf balls. The history of golf balls dates back to the early 17th century.  While going though many transitions over the centuries, players started out with a wooden golf ball, then moving on to the featherie golf balls (a feather stuffed leather sack) and on to the gutta-percha golf ball (made from the rubber like sap of a spoadilla tree).

Around the 20th century multi-layer golf balls were invented, adding characteristics to golf balls and forever changing golf balls history as we new it.

Featherie Golf Balls

By the early 17th century a new type of ball was being invented called the with goose feathers and finally painted (making the first nd compacted, making a colored golf balls).  Once the paint dried, the ball was boiled and placed inside a cowhide; where it expanded and compacted, making a new type of golf ball with great flying abilities.  This was called the Feathery golf ball.
