Golfer at a Glance - Fifteen Amazing Facts about Golfer Phil Mickelson
By Hannah Birss

Every month for the last little while, Knetgolf has been researching and covering some of your favourite golfer and sharing with you some amazing facts about them. Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, and Arnold Palmer have all graced our page, so its high time golf legendary graced our page. So here we are, 15 amazing facts about Masters champ Phil Mickelson!

1. Mickelson was born on June 16th in 1970 to Phil Sr. and Mary Mickelson, in San Diego, California. Unsurprisingly, he began golfing early in his childhood, first running away from home to the golf course at the age of three.

2. Of course, Phil went on to win 34 San Diego Junior Golf Association Titles. His father, an airline pilot, helped him score tickets to fly to the tournaments. When it seemed like Phil was going to be a golfing star, his mother took a second job to help pay for his American Junior Golf Association play.  With the support of his parents, he won three consecutive AJGA Rolex Player of the Year awards, leading to a full scholarship to Arizona State University.

3. He thrived in University too – he won 1st team All-American honors all four years before receiving his degree in psychology. He turned professional at the age of 22– the same age that I was still trying to lose the “freshman” fifteen.

4. Three Masters win in 2004, 2006, and 2010, five major championships  and more than 40 career wins later, Phil is now one of the sport’s greatest and highest-paid players. The only major win that has eluded him? The U.S. Open – where he has finished as runner-up six times.

5. Mickelson has spent over 700 weeks in the top ten of the Official World Golf Ranking, with a career high world ranking of 2nd several times. He currently sits at 22, having ended 2014 at #14.

6. He made his  Italian mother proud (is there ever an Italian mother that isn’t proud of her children, though?) by being inducted in 2008 to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. In 2012, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, and has been regarded as the second greatest golfer of his era, behind Tiger Woods.

7. Mickelson is the only left-handed player to win the U.S. Amateur, and at the 1991 Masters, he became the first lefthander to shoot a sub-par round at Augusta national. In fact, this southpaw is popularly known as “Lefty”.

Coincidentally, I’m also known as “Lefty” but that’s only because I have two left feet.

8. Despite all these left-handed accolades, Mickelson is in fact right-handed. So why does he play with his left hand? He learned by watching his right-handed father swing and mirroring it.

So he’s not even left handed?  It’s like he’s mocking me.

9. He, Tiger Woods, and Jack Nicklaus are the only players to win the NCAA Championship and U.S. Amateur in the same year.

10. His brother Tim is no slouch at golf either – he’s the head coach for Arizona State Golf. Phil had joined the team in November 2015 as his brother’s assistant coach in between hiring, but was “fired” from the team in January.

15. Mickelson and his family are no slouches in the charity department either. In 2003, he began playing golf on behalf of the Special Operations Warrior Foundations, a group that provides college grants for children whose Special Ops parents have been lost in battle or training. In 2005, he and Amy started Start Smart, which hosts 1,500 San Diego elementary schoolchildren and takes them on a back-to-school shopping spree based on need and achievement. That year they also began the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teacher Academy – where hundreds of math and science teachers are brought together to inspire students to pursue careers in the sciences.
